Storage

What are different types of Memory?

There are three main types of storage memory that every human has, sensory, short-term, and long-term memory. Each is used for different situations in our lives.
  1. Sensory Memory: the immediate, very brief recording of sensory information in the memory system
  2. Short-term Memory: activated memory that holds a few items briefly( Ex: dialing a 7-digit phone number for pizza and then forgetting)
  3. Long-term Memory: the relatively permanent and limitless storehouse of the memory system. This includes knowledge, skills, and life experiences

As mentioned in Encoding there are explicit and implicit memories that result from different types of processing.

  • Explicit Memory
  • AKA Declarative Memory
  • Semantic Memory: You claim that you know a certain fact
  • Episodic Memory: You claim that you remember a certain memory
  • Processed in the Hippocampus
  • Implicit Memory
  • AKA Nondeclarative Memory
  • Procedural Memory: You claim that you know how to do a certain task
  • Processed in the cerebellum

By understanding each type of memory and what they are used for, we can maximize our storage for retrieval. To maximize, we must use different types of encoding practices to help the information actually stay in our brains. It could be using the spacing effect to help get certain information into our long-term memory. The whole point of having these different methods is to allow you to explore each one and find the right method for you.
